As a seasoning, the seeds are used whole or ground in a variety of ethnic cuisines.
Botanical name: Trigonella foenum-graecum L.
Also known as Greek hay seed, or trigonella, fenugreek is a member of the Leguminosae, or pea and bean family. Fenugreek's Latin name Foenum graecum, means Greek hay; the ancients used it for hay, as well as food and medicine.
fenugreekThe fenugreek plant is an aromatic annual, approximately two feet in height, with cream colored, pea-like flowers that produce slender, four to six-inch pods. Each pod contains 10 to 20 small, hard, yellowish-brown, curved seeds with yellow interiors. The seeds contain vanilla-scented coumarin, and are high in mucilage (40%). The scent and taste of these seeds has been described as a combination of celery and maple, or a nutty flavored caramelized sugar--spicy, sweet, and slightly bitter all at once
Fenugreek is mentioned in a variety of ancient writings, like the papyri found in Egyptian tombs and the records of the Roman emperor, Charlemagne. In early Egypt, fenugreek functioned as a fodder crop, and as one of the ingredients in the incense which gave off the "holy smoke" used in embalming and purification ceremonies. Fenugreek was brought from Western Asia to Western Europe by Benedictine monks in the 9th century. Many cultures have employed the mucilaginous qualities of fenugreek seeds in folk medicine. It's been prescribed as an expectorant and laxative, and to reduce fever and cure diabetes, anemia and rickets. As an external poultice, fenugreek was often used to soothe boils and ulcers. In the Middle Ages it was popular in hair preparations as a cure for baldness, and in India, it's long been used to produce a yellow cloth dye. | | | Features: | |

This is impressive fenugreek! Item arrived very quickly, bulk bags were in good condition and the fenugreek itself was among the best I've encountered. Really delicious! In fact, so good I find myself having a cup of warm fenugreek tea without anything else added...something I've never enjoyed before but the flavor of this is wonderful.
Wonderful for flavoring especially if you like to avoid the heavy chemicals of bullion etc...for other uses (ie, lactating women), I'd go with the organic variety instead. In fact, now that I know the quality of this fenugreek seed, my next purchase will be organic from the same company. Delicious, very nice price and fast shipping.

Firstly, google the health benefits of fungreek [they are numerous].
Secondly, fenugreek is one of those spices that you cannot deal with like other spices. These little seeds are hard as rocks and unless you want to ruin your spice-grinder, I'd highly recommend you follow my procedure for using fenugreek:
Well, to begin, fenugreek is actually a legume (so, if you are prone to gastro problems with beans and legumes then you might want to take a beano or equivalent supplement before ingesting fenugreek).
If you want the benefits of raw fenugreek seeds. Put 1/4 cup of fenugreek seeds in a 2 cup or so capacity container and add 1/2 cup boiling water and let steep for an hour, place steeped fenugreek covered in fridge overnight and you will have some lovely, slightly chewy, less bitter fenugreek that you can add to soups and stews or eaten by the spoonful as a health supplement. One thing you will notice, is, when you add hot water to fenugreek, they will not only soften, but, they will sprout out little tail-buds which makes them sort of mid-sprout and highly digestible.
If you want to fully sprout fenugreek, you can google for many techniques.
If you only want to sprout this fenugreek, I'd say this is highly sproutable since even adding boiling water to the seeds did not stop them from sprouting little sprout ends.
Warning: If you 'toast' fenugreek it will stink up your house to high hell and it takes days and days to get the odor out of your house and if you are planning on selling your home, you do NOT want to toast fenugreek!
Anyway, my husband hates fenugreek and I love it with a passion. I think fenugreek is one of those love or hate spices.
In closing, this fenugreek is very high quality, fresh and definitely sproutable!
Happy fenugreeking! lol

FENUGREEK SEEDSNov 28, 2011
By REKHA I do not recommend this product , I had bought it to sprout, out of whole cup full of seeds I only got 4 shoots of sprouts , I tried cup full 3 times , that means they have pretreated this with some chemical to give it self life or its GMO, if you wish to find out true quality of any seeds you buy sprout some of it , if it sprouts well then you know they have not been messed with in lab , if they do not sprout means nutritional value has been taken out by some form of pretreatment , this was disappointment

Not a quality productJan 07, 2012
By UN This is not a good quality seeds. Amazon should check its quality before shipping to customers. Seeds do not germinate at all and taste is different than other fenugreek seeds. I do not recommend this product.
